One review has the two doing different jobs, and the pair neither
Pooling 25 trials, chondroitin reduced pain and physical function while glucosamine slowed joint narrowing. On three trials, the two combined did neither.
What the study found
Chondroitin moved pain, glucosamine moved structure, the pair neither
A 2024 review pooled 25 trials and found the two agents doing different jobs. Chondroitin sulfate reduced pain and improved physical function. Glucosamine sulfate slowed the narrowing of the knee joint. The combination of the two did neither, on three trials.
The caveat · Ignores funder and brand effects
This review does not separate trials by manufacturer, by funder, or by how well allocation was concealed, the three things earlier analyses of this literature found decide the answer. Its combination conclusion rests on three trials. It reports direction and significance, no effect sizes.
What we don't know
Whether chondroitin and glucosamine ease pain turns on method, not data. Analyses splitting trials by funder, brand and trial quality find no difference a patient would notice; the review finding a benefit did not split them.
