Everyday tasks improved; the memory tests did not

In 41 people with mild Alzheimer's, 49 weeks on 1.05 g a day beat placebo on a score for shopping and handling money, and on neither cognitive test.

What the study found

In 49 weeks the daily-living score moved and the memory scores did not

Forty-one people with mild Alzheimer's spent 49 weeks on 1.05g a day of lion's mane mycelium or placebo, the longest trial anyone has run. Their score for everyday tasks like shopping and handling money beat placebo. On both cognitive tests, no between-group comparison was significant.

The caveat · 41 finished; the target was 60

Sixty-eight people were recruited and 41 finished, against the researchers' own target of 60. The company that makes the capsule funded the trial and pays five of the authors. Three of the four people who quit over side effects were taking lion's mane.
