A herbal throat spray helped at 20 minutes, not by day 3, in one trial
In 60 adults with sore throat, hoarseness or cough, a five-oil spray including a related oregano eased the worst symptom 20 minutes after use. By day 3 the difference from placebo was no longer clear.
What the study found
A five-oil throat spray beat placebo at 20 minutes and not at day 3
In 60 adults with sore throat, hoarseness or cough, a five-oil spray, 30% of it a related oregano species, eased the worst symptom in 73% against 41% on placebo 20 minutes after one use. By day 3, at 72% against 59%, the gap could be chance. It fits brief relief, not a shorter illness.
The caveat · A different oregano, in a blend
The oregano in it is Origanum syriacum, not the Origanum vulgare sold as oil of oregano. It was blended with mint, eucalyptus and rosemary oils, so no one oil's effect can be picked out. The spray went on the throat and was not swallowed.
