Adding exercise and omega-3 to vitamin D changed nothing

DO-HEALTH put 2,157 adults over 70 into every combination of 2,000 international units daily, omega-3 and a home strength programme. Three years on, nothing had moved.

What the study found

Eight groups, three years, and not one outcome moved

DO-HEALTH randomised 2,157 adults over 70 into every combination of 2,000 international units of vitamin D3 daily, omega-3 and a home strength programme. Three years later, blood pressure, physical performance, memory, fractures and infections were no better in any group.

The caveat · Unusually healthy for their age

Participants were picked for being unusually healthy for their age, with no major health event in five years and good mobility, so a frailer group might respond differently. Testing six outcomes at once, the authors demanded a p value below 0.01, a strict bar that would hide a modest real effect. Three years is short for both fractures and cognition.
