The magnesium that stops a migraine fast is not the capsule

In 948 people, magnesium given by drip brought an active migraine down within 15 to 45 minutes and still helped a day later. The capsule does a different job: fewer attacks, less severe.

Magnesium

Supplement evidence is usually a slow average over weeks. Across 11 studies in 948 people, an infused dose brought an active migraine down within 15 to 45 minutes, and the relief was still measurable a day later. Swallowed as a capsule it does something else entirely: across 10 studies in 789 people, attacks came less often and hit less hard. The drip is given in a clinic under supervision, and nothing about that speed transfers to a bottle on a shelf.

The findings behind this

PainA magnesium drip eased migraine fast; capsules did a different job

In 948 people, an infused dose eased migraine within 15 to 45 minutes and still helped a day later. In 789 others, a daily capsule cut how often migraines came and how hard they hit.

★★☆Single study — solid evidence, such as one good trial or a large observational dataset, but not replicated at the top tier. The drip is given in a clinic under supervision, and nothing about that result transfers to a capsule taken at home. Some of the pooled studies assigned participants poorly, by the authors' own account. And each half of this rests on fewer than a thousand people.Click to keep this openRelieve painMagnesium
