Settled ground

In hospitals, magnesium is a life-saving drug, not a supplement

By drip, in 10,141 women with pre-eclampsia, magnesium sulphate cut eclamptic seizures by more than half and lowered the mother's risk of dying. Before a very early birth it cuts cerebral palsy risk.

Magnesium

Most people meet magnesium as a capsule in the supplement aisle. In 10,141 women with pre-eclampsia, a dangerous rise in blood pressure during pregnancy, the drip cut eclamptic seizures by more than half and lowered the mother's own risk of dying. Given shortly before a very early delivery it does a different job: less cerebral palsy in the child, though how far the risk falls is not settled. The capsule has never been shown to do either.

The findings behind this

Sexual & reproductiveThe hospital magnesium drip more than halved seizures in pregnancy

Magnesium sulphate given by drip to 10,141 women with pre-eclampsia more than halved eclamptic seizures and cut the mother's own risk of dying. Magnesium capsules are not this drug.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials. This is magnesium sulphate at monitored clinical doses through a vein; magnesium sold in capsules has never been shown to do anything for eclampsia risk. The trial ran across 33 countries with very different standards of care, so the background risk it was measured against varied from site to site. And the Cochrane review is built around this same trial, so the two are not independent of each other.Click to keep this openSupport a healthy pregnancyMagnesium
Sexual & reproductiveA drip before a very early birth lowers the baby's cerebral palsy risk

Magnesium sulphate given to the mother shortly before a very preterm delivery reduced cerebral palsy and improved gross motor function in the child. How far the risk falls is not settled.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials. The reviewed trials establish the direction but not the size; how far the risk falls is not settled here. This is a different job from preventing a mother's seizures, working a different way, and the two should not be read as one use. And it applies to births that are very preterm, not to pregnancy generally.Click to keep this openSupport a healthy pregnancyMagnesium
