Myth check

L-theanine acts like an instant, mild sedative, and/or fully cancels out caffeine's jittery or anxious side effects when the two are combined.

One placebo-controlled trial (White et al., 2016) found a real, measurable reduction in subjective stress and salivary cortisol response to a lab stressor from a single dose — but this is a modest, context-dependent calming effect, not sedation, and it does not start instantly: theanine's own absorption curve shows plasma levels still rising through the first 40-55 minutes.

Real, evidence-backed calming effects exist in at least one placebo-controlled trial, but they build gradually over the 40-60 minute absorption window rather than acting like a fast sedative. The popular 'cancels caffeine's jitters' framing is not something this evidence confirms.

Mental & cognitiveYour alertness responds to the caffeine in a blend, not the theanine

Pooling 11 trials of caffeine-theanine blends, the gain in alertness over the first two hours tracked how much caffeine was in the mix more closely than how much theanine.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials. The 11 trials used a spread of doses and designs rather than one fixed ratio, so this is a pattern across mixtures rather than a test of any single blend. The authors call theanine's contribution comparatively modest rather than absent, which leaves room for a larger pool to move it. And every trial pooled here tested combinations, so none of it measures theanine by itself.Click to keep this openFocus and think clearly
Physical & bodyTaking theanine with caffeine may soften the blood-pressure spike

In one trial of 48 people, 200mg of theanine taken with 250mg of caffeine flattened the blood-pressure rise the caffeine caused. On its own, theanine left alertness, jitters and mood unchanged.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials. One trial of 48 people, and it was designed to study caffeine, with theanine as the modifier rather than the subject. For anyone taking theanine by itself for calm focus, the same trial is a null result: alertness, jitteriness and mood did not move.Click to keep this openSupport heart and blood flow
Mood & wellbeingOne 200mg dose of theanine eased stress within an hour, cortisol later

In one trial of 26 adults, a drink carrying 200mg of theanine and three minor ingredients cut rated stress at one hour, not at three; cortisol fell at three hours, not at one.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials.Thirty-four people finished the trial, but the treatment effects were computed on 26 — the ones who had actually reacted to the task at baseline, picked out after the fact. An industry grant funded the study, and the paper says the funder had no hand in the analysis. The other ingredients were phosphatidylserine, alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine and chamomile, each in a small dose. Why the two effects arrived two hours apart is unexplained. Performance on the task itself never moved.Click to keep this openManage stress and anxiety
Mood & wellbeingA theanine drink may blunt cortisol's rise under stress, in one trial

Three hours after a drink with 200 mg of theanine, a stressful task did not raise the typical person's cortisol; after placebo it did. Resting cortisol was not compared.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials.Thirty-six people enrolled and 34 finished, but the effects were computed on 26, chosen after testing and before unblinding for having reacted to the task at baseline. Four people gave too little saliva and were left out of the cortisol analysis, and the paper does not say how many remained. The drink was not theanine alone: it also carried 25 mg of alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, 1 mg of phosphatidylserine and 10 mg of chamomile. Before dosing and at one hour the task did not reliably raise cortisol, so the rise the drink blunted appeared at one session out of three. A grant from a company, Neurobrands, paid for the trial, and the paper says the funder had no input into its design, conduct or interpretation.Click to keep this openManage stress and anxiety
Mental & cognitiveA year of matcha left its main thinking tests flat, nudging two others

In one trial, 99 older adults with mild cognitive decline took 2g of matcha a day for a year: slightly better at reading faces, a hint of better sleep, nothing on the main thinking tests.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials. This was whole matcha, theanine and catechins and caffeine together, so no result here belongs to theanine specifically. The two results that moved were secondary outcomes, which carry less weight than the ones the trial was built to test. And everyone in it already had cognitive decline, which is not a healthy adult drinking green tea.Click to keep this openFocus and think clearly
SleepPeople on theanine fell asleep a little sooner and rated sleep better

Pooled across 18 trials and 897 people, theanine shortened the time people said they took to fall asleep and improved how they rated their sleep. Every result was self-reported.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials.Every outcome here is what people reported about their own sleep; nothing was recorded by a wrist monitor or in a sleep lab. Few of the pooled trials tested theanine on its own rather than mixed with other ingredients, so its individual share stays blurred. And the authors say the best dose and duration are still undetermined.Click to keep this openSleep better
Mood & wellbeingFeeling less stressed on theanine did not mean doing the task better

In one trial of 26 adults, a drink with 200mg of theanine lowered rated stress at one hour and saliva cortisol two hours later. Scores on the stressful task itself did not change.

★★★Well replicated — this finding’s sources average out to meta-analyses, systematic reviews or high-powered trials.Twenty-six of the 34 who finished were analysed, and they were the ones who had reacted to the task at baseline. The drink was not theanine alone: phosphatidylserine, alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine and chamomile came with it, in small doses. An industry grant funded the trial, and the paper says the funder had no hand in its design or analysis. A brain-wave finding in the same trial turned up only in the more anxious participants and did not track the stress or cortisol results, so it stands unexplained.Click to keep this openManage stress and anxiety

OtherHow much theanine a tea holds depends on its type, region and season

Across 2,983 Chinese teas, lightly fermented kinds such as green tea sat among the richest in theanine, and spring-picked leaf held the most. That is the leaf itself, not a brewed cup.

★★☆Single study — solid evidence, such as one good trial or a large observational dataset, but not replicated at the top tier. This measured the tea itself, not a brewed cup, so what reaches a drink is a separate question. It is a chemistry survey, so it says nothing about what any of it does in a person.Click to keep this open
Mental & cognitiveTheanine may sharpen accuracy only when caffeine is in the mix

In one trial, 100mg of theanine with 50mg of caffeine had people spotting targets more accurately than placebo, on one brief task. Theanine by itself moved nothing.

★☆☆Contested — the evidence disagrees with itself, or the finding carries a caution. A caution or conflict always shows one star, however strong the sources are.Conflicting evidenceThe trial was built as a caffeine comparison, so the pairing was never its main question. Accuracy was one of several measures taken in that task. The advantage was over placebo, and caffeine alone was credited on a different measure, so nothing here sets the pair against caffeine by itself.Click to keep this openFocus and think clearly

Mental & cognitiveCaffeine and theanine each kept attention up; together, no extra gain

In one trial, 27 people did a two-hour attention task. 50mg of caffeine or 100mg of theanine on its own held errors down against placebo, and the two together did no better than either alone.

★☆☆Contested — the evidence disagrees with itself, or the finding carries a caution. A caution or conflict always shows one star, however strong the sources are.Conflicting evidenceA single two-hour task. Theanine's effect showed up in behaviour but not in the brain-wave marker much of this field leans on, so the two kinds of evidence do not line up here. And it disagrees with a similarly dosed trial that did find an advantage for the combination.Click to keep this openFocus and think clearly

Mood & wellbeingFour weeks of theanine may ease low mood and anxiety and help sleep

In one trial, 30 healthy adults took 200mg of theanine a day for four weeks. Self-rated depression and anxiety fell, parts of a sleep questionnaire improved, and word fluency gained.

★☆☆Contested — the evidence disagrees with itself, or the finding carries a caution. A caution or conflict always shows one star, however strong the sources are.CautionThe participants skewed middle-aged and older, and most were women. A long list of outcomes was tested at once, which on its own makes some of the positive ones likely to be chance.Click to keep this openSupport mood

SleepWith a little theanine, a small caffeine dose may not cost you sleep

In one small trial of young women, 30mg of caffeine kept them awake longer after they first fell asleep; 50mg of theanine taken with it brought that wake time back to placebo.

★☆☆Contested — the evidence disagrees with itself, or the finding carries a caution. A caution or conflict always shows one star, however strong the sources are.CautionOne small crossover trial in young women only, so nothing here covers men, older adults or anyone especially sensitive to caffeine. The 30mg of caffeine is well under a standard cup of coffee at roughly 95mg, which leaves the everyday dose untested. Mental & cognitiveOn theanine, brain waves may shift like attention, not like sedation

In one small lab study, theanine lowered the brain's background alpha rhythm while raising the part of it that builds as attention is aimed. This is electrical activity, not how focused anyone felt.

★☆☆Contested — the evidence disagrees with itself, or the finding carries a caution. A caution or conflict always shows one star, however strong the sources are.CautionThis is electrical activity recorded in one small single-lab study, not behaviour and not how focused anyone felt or performed. A distinct signature is not the same thing as better concentration.Click to keep this openFocus and think clearly
