Milk protein was still working when the amino acids had stopped

In older men, 6 g of branched-chain amino acids and 30 g of milk protein raised muscle building identically for two hours. From hours two to five, only milk protein was still holding.

What the study found

BCAAs matched milk protein for two hours, then fell back

Three of the nine essential amino acids come in the tub; the other six do not, and it shows. Six grams of branched-chain amino acids and 30 g of milk protein raised muscle building identically in older men for two hours, and by hours two to five only milk protein was still holding.

The caveat · Doses unmatched: 6 g against 30 g

Fifteen men per group, healthy and aged around 71, at rest with no exercise. The doses are not matched: 6 g of branched-chain amino acids against 30 g of milk protein is the choice a shopper faces, not a gram-for-gram test of which does more. Nothing here was measured beyond five hours.
