Giving a child iron at the same time blunted what zinc did

Across 96 preventive trials in children, zinc did less when iron was given with it. Separately, zinc lowered iron markers in at least one subgroup of under-threes.

What the study found

Iron given alongside zinc cut zinc's benefit in children

Across 96 preventive trials in children, a consistent pattern was that adding iron reduced what zinc achieved. A separate pooling in children under three found zinc lowering several iron markers, in at least one subgroup. The two point the same way from opposite sides of the pairing.

The caveat · A subgroup pattern plus lab markers

Neither finding comes from a trial designed to test the pairing: one is a subgroup pattern and the other a set of marker outcomes graded very low to moderate certainty. The usual explanation, that two similar metals compete for the same route into the body, is not tested by either source. All of it concerns children given substantial doses of both minerals in settings where deficiency is common, not the small amounts in a multivitamin.
