Babies on soy formula grew up much like those on cow-milk formula
Six hundred American infants were followed from birth to adolescence. Bone mineralisation, most thinking and learning measures and reproductive development were comparable.
What the study found
Soy and cow-milk formula came out alike from birth to adolescence
Six hundred American infants were followed on soy formula, cow-milk formula or breast milk. Bone mineralisation, most thinking and learning measures, and reproductive organ development were comparable between the two formulas. Breastfed infants stayed leaner into adolescence than either.
The caveat · Only 190 of 600 were left at 14
Only 190 of the 600 enrolled were still taking part at fourteen, and children who leave a study rarely do so at random. Families chose the feeding method, so whatever tracks with that choice tracks with these results. Heart-rate and autonomic differences between groups are reported and unexplained.
